The Symbol of the Good Shepherd
The figure of Jesus as a Good Shepherd was a favorite representation in the early church. It was applied to Jesus both by himself and by others. His own mission and the mission of his disciples was to the lost sheep of the House of Israel (Mt. 10:6) Jesus says, "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd giveth his life for his sheep...I know mine, and mine know me." (John 11:14-16, 27-28) |
